Sandwich Shop

Overview

Sandwich Shop is a Hypercasual, Arcade, and Time Management game developed for the Apple Store and Google Play Store. The player plays as a sandwich maker in a restaurant with an endless flow of customers. Here the player serves as many customers as they can until they make a mistake!

This game was developed by a team of two. I worked on this game as a Lead Designer with Jacob M. as a Developer.

Game Progression

When the player starts the game, a customer and their order will appear facing the player on screen. The player must make the sandwich with the ingredients on the customer's order and in the correct order, the ingredients are stacked on the sandwich. Once the player complete's the current customer's sandwich, a new customer and order will appear for the player to fulfill.

The routine continues until the player selects the wrong ingredient while making the customer's sandwich or if the customer's patience runs out.

The routine of making the correct sandwiches for the customers gets progressively harder as the game progresses. As the number of customers the player serves increases, the customers will order taller sandwiches, less time will be given to fulfill orders, and more ingredients will appear for the player to add to a sandwich.

UI and Level Design

When designing the main UI for the game's shop and menus, I decided to go for a very simple look. I saw that majority of the hyper-casual "Tap to Start" games on the mobile market had a very simple look, using basic boxes and squares for buttons and text containers. Referencing mobile games on the market also came with the idea for the text font. I saw that many mobile hyper casual games had a font that was typically in all caps and was bold. I wanted to find a similar font to match just that.

I wanted the player to feel like they were in a sandwich shop and they were simulating a sandwich maker. This is why when a customer's order is filled, that customer and the customer waiting in line, to the left of them, will both slide to the right, making the customer whose order was fulfilled slide off-screen and the new customer slide in front of the player.

When creating the level, I wanted to make sure it was a priority that the player was able to clearly see the customer's order and the sandwich they are currently creating. To the right or below are pictures I created in Canva of prototypes of the main level design.

Unlockables

The player can use the currency they earn while playing the game or watch an ad to unlock skins. These skins include different furniture variations for the shop, different ingredient variations the customers can order, or different customers that can visit the player's sandwich shop while the player is in game or idle in the background of the main menu.

This was implemented to give the player a fresher look of the level everytime they played, so they will least likely get bored of seeing the same ingredients and customers everyday and work towards unlocking these skins.
